Messel Pit hike

During the 2-hour hike to the bottom of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will learn all the details of the origin and significance of the fossil site, which is unique in the world.

Which animals lived in the tropical rainforest of Messel 48 million years ago? What did primeval horses live on, and how do we know? How long was the largest crocodile? This hike to the bottom of the Messel Pit leads us past excavation sites through a geology of oil shale to the artesian aquifer, where water rises naturally to the surface.
